We celebrate the Maine potato this week at market. Find fresh, local grown Maine potatoes with many of our farm vendors. Kathy with Valley View Farm, Scott with Jillson's Farm, and Kay with Spring Brook farm offer up farm fresh potatoes. Many of our other vendors will feature the potato this week as well, keep your eye out for them.

The Master Food Preservers and Rae Belanger will be at market on Wednesday.

Musician for this week is the Newts on Saturday in Cumberland. They will offer a children's inter-active music program.

This week is Maine Lobster and Seafood Week at the market. Often rrecipes, crafts or products that enhance a Maine seafood and lobster meal will be at the market. Off the top of this bloggers head I can tell you that The Craftin' Scot often carries lobster/Maine theme fabric bibs and potholders. Casco Bay Soap Co. has a Kitchen Scrub soap that helps remove odors like fish, onion and garlic from your hands. Start out your meal with creamy cheeses made by Balfour Farms or Spring Day Creamery. Oh The Mighty Cucumber!

Cucumber have been in the news, alot. Now is a great time to remember to try to buy local, ask your farmers about their practices and put your faith in the community around you. I love cucumbers and are actually growing some of my own this year. Did you know.....

1. Cucumbers contain most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc.

2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B Vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours.

3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance.
4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area.

5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!!

6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. 8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water.

9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone!
10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber with react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams.
11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemcials will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath.
12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your faucets, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean.

13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!!

Sweetser's Apple Barrel & Orchards Honored

Three family-owned businesses took home honors last night at the 2010 Maine Family Business Awards held at the Marriott at Sable Oaks in South Portland.

The Institute for Family-Owned Business each year selects the winners out the state's 36,000 family-owned companies based on nominations and applications.

Sweetser's Apple Barrel and Orchards in Cumberland won the Maddy Corson Award, given to businesses with fewer than 25 employees. The property has been in the Sweetser family for nearly 200 years, and is currently owned by Gregg Sweetser. The seasonal business has 1,200 trees that produce 39 varieties of apples.

Fiddlehead Recipe

Fiddleheads are hot at the market right now...but get them quick they don't last long.

Here is a recipe from a market customer, Thanks Mary Ann!

Fiddleheads with Angel Hair Pasta

Submitted by: Mary Ann Thomas.

First step, I boiled the fiddleheads, 1 pound of them for 3-5 minutes in a pot of salted water; then removed the fiddleheads and sauteed them with oil, garlic, and pepper. I added a touch of Louisiana hot sauce - not too much - and that worked out just fine.

Second step, I cooked the pasta in the water from the fiddleheads, so that the pasta also tasted like the fiddleys.

It was really great. Had quite enough fiddleheads for 2 meals - so I had 2 dinners (and a breakfast!) of fiddleheads/pasta. Really enjoyed it.

Fiddleheads are the fresh local in-season veggie, farm fresh eggs, local meats, fresh goat milk cheeses, hand sewn aprons, the most beautiful wooden bowls, lovely soaps, prepared foods and baked goods and more and more and more!

Member Highlight ~ Cottage Berry Farm

Gearing up for the summer season we are behind the scenes working, organizing and meeting to bring you another fantastic market season. The first market opens in Cumberland on Saturday May 1st, 8:30am - 12:30pm at the Mabel I Wilson School located on Tuttle Rd. in Cumberland.

We will have several new members that will be featured on the blog, but in the meantime, here is a bit about Leslie Fitgerald, a long time member of the market:

Leslie Fitzgerald of Cottage Berry Farm in Cumberland, formally Afternoon Tea and Company, LLC, is growing the berry patch this year, adding more blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, cranberries and all new, honeyberries. Some of these berries will be available in pints and quarts at the market but you’ll find most of them in her gluten and dairy free scones and other baked goods available at Falmouth, Freeport and Cumberland.

The needle felted dolls (seen above) Leslie makes from Freeport’s New Elm Farm fleece will be available again this year as well as her one-of-a-kind felted hats. Look for hand-painted merino wool neck cozies, fingerless mitts and headbands too.

She’ll also be carrying Ginny Gold’s Bags O’ Gold hand made Market Bags.

The Cumberland Farmers Market Association is made up of some super fantastic vendors. Alpaca farmers, specialty foods, baked goods, cut flowers, seedlings, fresh eggs, vegetable farmers, fresh dairy & cheese, artisan soaps, hand knit items, a lobster fisherman, candles, spices & herbs, local meats and soo much more.

Here is what we are:
We hail from 19 towns in 6 counties Cumberland, York, Androscoggin, Sagadahoc, Lincoln and Oxford. We will impact the lives of 125,000 Maine residents with our markets in (5) five Maine communities with on location markets in those communities. We will indirectly impact the Maine residents in an additional 14 communities numbering another 125,000 residents giving CFMA an impact, direct or indirect of nearly 250,000 Mainer residents or approximately 1/4 the population of Maine.

How interesting are all these facts? Put together by our own Market Manager, Leslie. She manages our members, advertising and makes sure we have a great balance of products at market to bring you the best one-stop local shopping experience we can.

Winter Veggies At Market

The Parsnip is one of the fine winter vegetables you will find at market.

Here's some info. on Parsnips..."Parsnip is considered a winter vegetable because its flavor is not fully developed until the roots have been exposed to near-freezing temperatures for 2 to 4 weeks in the fall and early winter. The starch in the parsnip root changes into sugar, resulting in a strong, sweet, unique taste". I found that the taste is similar to a carrot, but unique to itself.

"Nutritionally, parsnips are low in calories, about 130 for a whole one 9" in length, and contain no saturated fat or cholesterol. That same 9" parsnip can boast a 6.4 grams of fiber, 93.1 mcg of folic acid (that's nothing to sneeze at), 59.2 mg of calcium, and 46.4 mg of potassium, and lesser amounts of vitamins B1, B2, B3, vitamin C, iron, and zinc".

Very cool! We have these 2 great girls, Jeanette & Heidi that are the Fender Blender Girls...they are blending up "green" smoothies for us at market. "Green" because they attach a blender to the back of their bike and blend using pedal power (see it there in the photo on the back of the bike) Also "green" because the smoothies use great ingredients like Kale, Parsley, Mint and more as the base of the smoothie (see how it is green in the blender). Adding in banana, mango or strawberries sweetens up the whole delicious concoction. They even use sample cups made out of corn that decompose and can go right in the compost pile!

Opening day in Freeport on Friday! After a successful test market in Freeport last year, vendors and locals alike are happy to see that the market is back in Freeport.

All the vendors are looking forward to the market in Freeport. And a fantastic group of vendors are participating to create a diverse market with something for everyone.

Purchase seedling to start your garden off right, fresh baked sweets and treats, 100% veggie soaps, beautiful flowers, farm fresh cheese, hand made aprons, teas, wonderful fragranced candles, fresh eggs from happy chickens, local meats, in season veggies and fruits and so much more. Come out to meet the vendors and see all that there is to offer.

Non profit tents will make appearances through out the season to help raise money for their particular cause.

Lakonia Olive Oil of Saco Maine offers at the market Olive Oil, Salad Dressings, Olives and other Greek products at market such as Greek Oregano, some food products (such as Baklava) and more.

While the Olives are grown in Greece, on their family farm, they are processed and bottled right here in Maine. Using the family recipes, the Salad Dressings are handmade and hand bottled by the family in Saco.

Taste testing is a sure way to see for yourself the pure taste of their product. Olives can be sampled as well as Salad Dressing and Olive Oil, tasted with a square of bread.

Asparagus will be available at market starting this week. Kay Fowler of Spring Brook Farm will be sure to have it.

Asparagus is low in calories, contains no fat or cholesterol, and is very low in sodium. It is a good source of folic acid, potassium, dietary fiber, and rutin.

The shoots are prepared and served in a number of ways around the world. In Asian-style cooking, asparagus is often stir-fried. Cantonese restaurants in the United States often serve asparagus stir-fried with chicken, shrimp, or beef, also wrapped in bacon. Asparagus may also be quickly grilled over charcoal or hardwood embers. It is also used as an ingredient in some stews and soups. In the French style, it is often boiled or steamed and served with hollandaise sauce, melted butter or olive oil Parmesan cheese or mayonnaise.

The best asparagus tends to be early growth (meaning first of the season) and is often simply steamed and served along with melted butter. Tall, narrow asparagus cooking pots allow the shoots to be steamed gently, their tips staying out of the water. Asparagus can also be pickled and stored for several years. Some brands may label them as "marinated" which means the same thing.

Apple Hill Gardens sells a variety of fresh and dried flowers. Annuals and perennials for your own beautiful garden. Fresh cut bouquets, dried flowers, wreaths, and swags. All flowers are grown without pesticides on their farm in Hartford, Maine.

You can see that they have a flair for decorating too. The little red wagon holding the colorful potted plants is such a nice artistic touch. Stop by for some fresh flowers to decorated your dinner table, or purchase a potted plant for a friend.

Find them at the market on Saturdays in Cumberland. Also participating in the special 3rd Thursday market in Grey, in June, July & August.

That's Kathy of Valley View Farm above. Valley View Farm has a wide variety of items to purchase at the market. Fresh in season vegetables (see the Fiddleheads in the basket in the bottom left of the picture), eggs, meats, seedlings, baked goods and more. Often Valley View Farm brings animals to the market for kids (young & old) to view and often pet and/or hold. This past weekend, they had baby chicks and a baby turkey. Purchase a variety of farm fresh selections from Kathy or Joe at the market Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday.

The Cumberland Farmers Market Association has a new childrens program, which we are now calling Y.A.M. which stand for Youth At Market.

On Saturday, Farmer Joe of Valley View farm, worked with any children that were interested to plant a seed to take home with them. Pots, seeds and potting soil were all generously donated. Many children participated and brought home a seed of their own to nurture. The activity was free of charge and enjoyed by many.
